C1 and his mom, Julie L.
Greetings from the state of Washington. My name is Julie. This is my first post since taking over administrative duties of this blog from Casdok, who is still operating her blog at Mother of Shrek. Thank you Casdok, for this opportunity.
Pictured with me is my oldest son C1, 13, who was diagnosed with Autism when he was six. He has been busy adjusting to a huge move from Michigan to Washington that occurred in March 2010. He’d like to move back to his home state, but is doing well with homeschooling, and is learning new things all the time. His dad, a Michigan State fan was quite dismayed when C1 recently declared the University of Michigan as his favorite college football team, and Hail to the Victors his favorite song. He's been going to college football games since age 7.

Swimming and playing games on his Nintendo 3DS are some of his favorite activities. He also loves spending time with his eight-year-old brother, me and his dad. Going places (museums, the grocery store, post office, and Hawaii!!, for example) tops his list of favorite things to do too.

Beauty & Macho
"My daughter 'Beauty' was diagnosed with autism when she was 2 yrs old. With the help of early intervention programs, sign language and therapy, she went from being a completely non-verbal child who didn't smile or play with others, to a vibrant young girl who plays, smiles, talks and laughs all the time! My son 'Macho' was unofficially diagnosed with PDD-NOS when he was 2 yrs old. Early intervention helped him learn to use the left side of his body and has helped him begin overcoming his severe Echolalia. He's now learning to speak spontaneously. He loves to smile, play peek-a-boo, and give hugs and kisses. Beauty is almost 5 yrs old, Macho is almost 3 yrs old, and I can see them both having very bright futures ahead of them!"

Deqlan
Hi All.I am a very proud Mom to Deqlan, aged 3 and a half years! We are from Gauteng in South Africa.
He was diagnosed with stage 4 Neuroblastoma, 25 May 2007, a cancer of the sympathetic nervous system at the age of 8 months. He went through 11 rounds of chemotherapy , 6 surgeries and procedures, more scans and blood and urines tests we could count, and he was declared to have NO EVIDENCE OF DISEASE on 16 Jan 2008!
Praise Our Lord, 25 months NED!
Just after Deqlan started chemotherapy we noticed he stopped saying Mama and stopped giving us the pictures of animals, he knew quite well. Then went the eye contact and Deqlan became fascinated with fans and tried to spin everything from car wheels to egg lifters.
On 25 Oct 2008, Deqlan was diagnosed to be on the autism spectrum.
We are currently treating Deqlan biomedically and seeing fantastic results. He is on a Gluten Casein Sugar Soya Yeast free diet and on variety of supplements and vitamins, as well as candida treatment. After being on this protocol for 1 year, his language has gone from 2 words this time last year to over 200. His eye contact is fantastic, he has stopped lining things up, he has stopped spinning himself in circles, he has started taking interest in certain people.
He adores cars and Thomas the train and friends. Deqlan loves saying the alphabet and counting! He has even started singing songs and pointing at things!
He is attending a wonderful school specialising for kids on the autism spectrum, and loving every moment of being there! He is also in speech and occupational therapy and swimming lessons.
We look forward to waking up each day with Deqlan as we know we are going to be blessed by each moment with Deqlan. Our lives have changed in the most wonderful way , our priorities are clearer then ever before, all the things that don’t matter we let go of.
We couldn’t be prouder, we absolutely love and adore our gorgeous gift from God, Deqlan Ross.
God Bless, lovely to meet you all

Martin (age 5) on the right was diagnosed with PDD-NOS two years ago. His more prominent symptoms were very significant language development delay and also significant social delay. In short, at 3yo he talked like an 18 month old, comprehended less. He threw lots of fits, many related to his difficulty understanding what was going on. He continues to have significant behaviour and speech issues but has made amazing (to us) progress. In this picture he is playing with his 18month old typically developing sister.

Rufus
Rufus is 10 years old, diagnosed with autism six years ago, and is currently in 5th grade in a full inclusion setting in a small elementary school in Baltimore. He has some significant challenges in communication and behaviors, but he is a generally happy boy with lots of smiles. While talking is difficult for Rufus, music (on an electronic keyboard), drawing (paper or computer) and surfing the web are activities that he excels at. He's also picking up skills in his second season on the Special Hockey team, The Baltimore Saints. While there are challenges in raising an autistic child there are unique joys that I would never trade away.
